State and local emergency crews are on the scene Tuesday at a two-vehicle wreck on the southernmost stretch of the U.S. Highway 181 Bypass service road. In the photo, Assistant Fire Chief Kirk Delgado calls out instructions after covering the open passenger door of an overturned sedan.

BEEVILLE – A 27-year-old Hebbronville woman was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m. Tuesday at the scene of a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 181 at the loop on the southernmost end of the access road east of the bypass.

According to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety in Corpus Christi, the accident occurred when the driver of a 2009 Chevrolet Impala, identified as Sandy Susan Gutierrez, failed to yield right of way at a stop sign.

Her southwest bound sedan was struck by a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado pickup that was traveling northwest on the same highway.

Troopers were joined at the scene by Bee County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Beeville Police Department officers just after 4 p.m. when the 911 call came.

The caller said one vehicle was overturned and smoking. The Beeville Volunteer Fire Department and Angel Care Ambulance Service EMS personnel also were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters at the scene had watered down part of the overturned vehicle to prevent a fire, and they stood by with hoses ready in case the car did start to burn.

The unidentified male driving the pickup truck received injuries that were not deemed to be life threatening and was taken by Angel Care Ambulance Service to Christus Spohn Hospital Beeville for treatment.

The DPS reported that the accident still is under investigation.
