Sidewalk to college nears completion

Crews smooth out the sloping portions of this sidewalk recently that connect it to the Tractor Supply parking lot. This is the last major concrete work that was needed for this city funded project.

BEEVILLE – Completion of the sidewalk that extends from Coastal Bend College to the busy Farm-to-Market Road 351 intersection with U.S. Highway 181 Business Route on the city’s north side is about two weeks from final completion.

Crews this week were pouring what likely will be the last of the concrete as they connect to the existing walkway along Highway 181 and up Charco Road.

“There are some issues we still need to finish up,” said Joe Montez, city manager.

Of course, the work will need to be inspected by the city and others before it is formally finished.

What people are noticing now is the tall grass growing between the roadway and the sidewalk — an area too narrow to mow easily.

“We had a concern with that,” Montez said. “We thought we could tie it into the back of the curb of the highway.”

State codes would not allow this.

“Now we are going to have to put our mower on there and mow that little medium between the back of the curb and the edge of the sidewalk,” he said. “We had to follow the state’s directions.”

This distance is a safety measure, he said.

“It makes sense,” the city manager said. “We are going to have rollerbladers on there, bicycles and skateboarders on it.

“If they slip and fall into the roadway, they could get seriously injured.”

The college is planning to extend this sidewalk, which stops at its entrance, to the dormitories. Those designs are still in the works.
