Skidmore-Tynan’s boys basketball team led briefly in the first quarter and only briefly in the fourth quarter Dec. 21, but that brief fourth quarter lead came at the most important time in a district-opening win.

The Bobcats, in their District 29-3A season debut, beat Taft by two points, 53-51, to go to 1-0 in district play.

Skidmore-Tynan held the lead on just three occasions during the win.

The Bobcats scored the first two points of the game, but Taft quickly evened things back up before taking a lead it would hold throughout the rest of the first, all of the second and third quarters, and much of the fourth quarter.

Skidmore battled back to tie the game at 45-45 and then, after falling behind 47-45, ran off six in a row thanks to a rebound and putback by Jacob Torres, two free throws from Bennett Martinez and a bunny by Andrew Silva off a feed from Martinez.

Taft responded with four straight points, evening the game on a free throw with 20.2 seconds left.

On the ensuing Skidmore possession, Torres dropped a pass down to the block for Silva, who flipped it up and in for the game-winning basket.

The basket put the finishing touches on a quarter that saw Skidmore outscore Taft 23-12.

Taft had won each of the first three quarters, leading 13-11 after one, 27-20 at halftime and then 39-30 after three quarters.

Skidmore was fueled by 10 made 3-pointers on the night.

Silva, Torres and Walker Widner each hit multiple treys on the night with Silva making two on his way to scoring a team-best 14 points.

He also had five steals and three rebounds.

Torres finished the night with 11 points to go with seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Widner tallied nine points for the game.

Martinez was also in double figures with 10 to go with four rebounds, four assists and six steals.

The Bobcats improved to 7-8 overall and 1-0 in District 29-3A play with the win.
