BEEVILLE – The high school team tennis season officially got underway for the Beeville Trojans Monday with a visit from the Pleasanton Eagles.
The visitors claimed the victory over Beeville by an 11-8 count, thanks in large part to their 9-3 record in singles play.
The Eagles won five of the six boys singles matches and four of the six girls singles matches.
Desmond Givens got Beeville’s lone boys singles victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cade McManus at first singles.
Brandon Dang, Ryan Martinez, Andrew Valis, Lukas Moreno and Nicholas Salazar all lost in two sets for the Trojans in singles play.
In girls singles play, Kalee Kroen and MaKayla Arevalo won for Beeville.
Kroen beat Lauren Dowdy 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 at first singles, while Arevalo claimed a 7-5, 6-4 win over Elly Hernandez at fourth singles.
Gabriela Speedon, Kinlee Ramon, Soledad Cuellar and Emily Luna lost in straight sets for Beeville.
The Trojans held a 5-2 edge in doubles plays in the match, winning two of the three matches in both boys and girls doubles, and winning the mixed doubles match in lopsided fashion.
Givens and Kroen picked up the win in mixed doubles for Beeville, downing Matt Garcia and Dowdy in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
In boys doubles, Dang and Martinez won at first doubles, while Chris Benavidez-Canut and Kelton Keys won at third doubles.
Dang and Martinez rallied from down a set to beat McManus and Luke Harlos, who won the first set 6-3. The Beeville duo won the second set 6-3 and took the tiebreaking set 7-5.
Benavidez-Cantu and Keys also lost the first set before rallying for the win. After dropping the first set 4-6, they won the next two sets by 6-1 counts to get the win.
Emily Reese and Ramon won at first doubles on the girls side, as did Alexandra Castillo and Alizabeth Martinez at second doubles.
Reese and Ramon won 6-4, 6-4 over Claire Benavidez and Hernandez. Castillo and Martinez claimed a 6-4, 6-3 win for Beeville.
The Trojans return to the court Sept. 23 when they host Kingsville.
