GOLIAD – One man is dead and a woman wounded in an overnight shooting in Goliad.
The deceased is 20-year-old Nathan Cortinas and the injured victim is 18-year-old Brianna Bexley. Both are Goliad residents.
The alleged shooter has been identified as 18-year-old Daniel Mendoza, also a resident of Goliad. He is under arrest for murder and is currently in the Goliad County Jail.
Sheriff’s deputies were called to a residence in the 100 block of S. Mt. Auburn Street in Goliad shortly before midnight for reported shooting. Preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were seated in a car when the shooter opened fire with a small caliber handgun.
The deceased victim was in the driver’s seat when the shooter opened fire from outside the vehicle. The wounded female was in the passenger seat. She is currently hospitalized at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio in critical condition. An infant in the back seat of the vehicle was uninjured.
Mendoza initially fled the scene before deputies arrived, but was taken into custody by Deputy Isaac Kimbrough sitting outside a local convenience store just before 5am. He did not resist arrest.
Investigators believe the shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute between the parties.
Mendoza has not yet been formally arraigned and no bond has been set.
The deceased was taken to the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.
Sgt. Donna Starry is in charge of the investigation, which is ongoing.
