KARNES CITY – Various agenda items crossed before the Karnes City council during the Tuesday, May 28, meeting held at City Hall.

Improvements to the municipal park are still in progress but holding because of weather restraints. The warm, dry weather of the approaching summer months should enable to the city to move forward on the drainage improvements within the park.

“There has been no change as the work is still weather dependent,” said City Manager Robert Evans.

The city council did approve the application of Rosalinda Zapata for the operation of a game room at 112 S. Browne St., within the city.

A  proclamation was signed by Mayor Leroy Skloss announcing the week of May 5-11 as the National Small Business Week. The city’s Chamber of Commerce joined with the council in declaring the city’s appreciation for the local small business men and women.

The Karnes City ISD Education Foundation, led by president Jennifer Dillingham requested support from the city for their summer fundraiser. It will be a Downtown Street Dance in August for the entire community. An exact date will be forthcoming and the council approved the request.

Ruben Leal addressed the court in regard to drainage problem at property located at 308 S. Highway 181. The council, thus the city, will work with Leal to come up with options to address the drainage issue from private property uphill from his location.

The 2019 street projects are progressing. Thonoff Consulting Engineers has requested bids on the various projects through the newspaper.

“We will have bid opening during the second week of June and will have a recommended award at the next regular meeting of the council,” said Evans.

The  water tower project update was provided to the council by M&S Engineering. The renovations are approximately 50% completed, according to the company.

In other action by the council, the Karnes City Police Department will be purchasing four police radar units for a little more than $5,000 as approval of the request was granted.
