FALLS CITY – At their own 7-on-7 football tournament, the Falls City Beavers claimed their fifth consecutive berth in the Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament, and their second appearance in Division III.

The Beaver Nation Tournament played host to Runge, Johnson City, Nixon-Smiley, Bloomington, Woodsboro, Charlotte, and Ganado as well Friday, May 31.

In Pool A, the Beavers swept their three games over Nixon-Smiley (42-6), Bloomington (34-20), and Charlotte (28-14). In Pool B, Runge went 1-2 with losses to Ganado (28-6) and Johnson City (13-7) but defeated Woodsboro (36-14). The Johnson City Eagles claimed Pool B with a two-score win over the Ganado Indians.

In the final, the Eagles took an early 12-0 lead before the Beavers hit their stride. A quick two scores, one off a pick-six returned by Brady Lyssy, put the Beavers up 14-12 at halftime. From there, the teams traded two additional scores, but the Beavers held on for the 28-26 win.

The Beavers will take part in the Division III 7-on-7 State Tournament on June 27-28 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station.

The Beaver Nation Tournament continued into Saturday, June 1, with another Division III bid on the line. That bid was claimed by Tidehaven, who defeated Poth (33-14) in that final.

According to the Texas State 7-on-7 organization’s website, Division III consists of teams in UIL classifications 3A Division II, and both Divisions of 2A and 1A.

At this year’s state tournament, the organization stated that all teams are required to wear soft shell helmets, with this going into full effect for all state qualifying tournaments in 2020.

The organization stated plans to provide helmets for all state qualifiers this year, with further details upcoming on how they will be distributed.
