RUNGE – In a thriller at Janssen Field, the Runge Yellowjackets came from behind to defeat the Trojans, 21-20, and clinch a playoff spot for the third consecutive year.
The ‘Jackets led 14-6 at halftime, but the Trojans rallied to take a 20-14 lead in the fourth quarter.
Troy Reynolds and Daniel Mendoza were involved in Runge’s first two touchdowns, according to ’Jackets’ head coach Abe Vargas.
Vargas said, “The momentum was with us at first, but then Charlotte got it at the end of the second quarter and in the third quarter.”
However, the ‘Jackets were able to right the ship later in the fourth quarter.
With three minutes left to play, Runge scored their third touchdown to tie the game.
The ensuing extra point gave them the lead.
The ‘Jackets then rallied on defense and did not allow the Trojans a chance at a comeback as time expired.
“The kids played their hearts out, and getting in the playoffs for the third year in a row is something we’re proud of,” Vargas said.
This weekend, the ‘Jackets will close out district play on the road as they pay the D’Hanis Cowboys a visit.
The game will be for the third and fourth seeds in 15-2A Division II.
“In D’Hanis, they play their games on Saturdays since they draw a bigger crowd compared to Fridays,” Vargas said.
“They get people from Hondo and Sabinal to come see the games. We’ll likely get either Agua Dulce, Bruni, or La Villa in the first round, depending on how we do in this game and how that district plays out.”
The winner of this game will draw the second seed from 16-2A Division II, and the loser will take on the 16-2A champions, in the 2A Division II Bi-District round next week.
Kickoff from D’Hanis is set for Saturday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m.
