RUNGE – The past year in Runge saw athletic director Abe Vargas, who took over the helm in the spring of 2018, set new expectations for the Yellowjackets.
In football, the ‘Jackets finished at 3-8 overall, 2-3 in 16-2A Division II. Despite the numbers, that earned Runge third place in district and they clinched their second consecutive playoff berth thanks to wins over Pettus (21-20) and Charlotte (18-14). In the bi-district round, the ‘Jackets fought hard but fell to La Villa, 35-25.
The Lady Jackets volleyball squad managed to secure a playoff berth as well. They defeated Waelder in four sets in the bi-district round, but fell to Round Top-Carmine in the area round.
In boys basketball, the ‘Jackets also earned a playoff bid as the third seed from 32-1A. However, they were ousted early by D’hanis (66-37) in bi-district.
As for baseball, the ‘Jackets earned a bid to represent 31-1A in the playoffs. However, they lost to Bruni (7-0) in Bi-District.
The Lady Jackets were represented by Marissa Rios in the THSWPA State Powerlifting Meet. She brought home the Bronze medal in the 105 weight class with a total lift of 660 lbs, including a 280 bench press.
The ‘Jackets also saw success with representatives at the Region IV-1A Meet in Huntsville. The Boys 4x400 M Relay took home sixth in the meet, and Christian Pina took eighth overall in the triple jump.
With his first full season completed, Runge athletic director Abe Vargas and the ‘Jackets will kickoff the 2019 football season at home as they host Flatonia on Friday, Aug. 30.
