Here’s the steeple

Richard Fierova A new sign was constructed for Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church in Refugio during this past week. The old sign was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey two years ago.

REFUGIO – Hurricane Harvey took Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church’s name away in August 2017.

The storm blew away the sign that identified the church.

Now, the Rev. Bill Marquis, pastor of Our Lady of Refuge Church,  said he has heard that travelers going north and south on U.S Highway 77 think there isn’t  a Catholic church in Refugio.

An anonymous donor decided to do something about the absence of a sign and provided funds to make a new one.

Borden Built Construction’s Patrick Borden, Tristen Briseno and Derrick Pena constructed the sign this past week.

The sign is a miniature version of the church’s steeple.

“We are thinking of adding a bell to it,” Marquis said.

A bell would complete the mini-replica.
