In 2010, shortly after I moved to the Coastal Bend, I joined a group of Bayside citizens to form a committee to plan and host a Fourth of July celebration. Over the past nine years, we have successfully revived the event’s tradition after a 17-year hiatus. Planning for the 2019 Bayside Fourth of July Celebration has begun. We hope all Baysiders and friends of Bayside from Refugio County and the surrounding area will plan to come and enjoy.

However, holding the event is a huge undertaking. It would help us immensely if we could get more volunteers leading up to and during the fourth. You don’t have to live in Bayside to be on this committee. Everyone is welcome to join. There is always something you can do to help, including in the decision-making process, getting the park ready for the event, putting up awnings, setting up tables for the food, overseeing the potluck, collecting donations at the fireworks and event clean up. I could go on.

An important part of the day is the potluck picnic. Folks are always instructed to “bring a dish to share” but the committee has some concern that if everyone who plans to eat does not contribute, we will run short of food. So please do bring a dish so your family does not miss out.

If you would like to help make this fun day happen by making donations, send checks to: The Bayside 4th of July Committee, 1104 Second St., Bayside, TX 78340. If you would like to donate a prize or a gift basket for our raffle, please call 361-944-4792. To join the committee or volunteer to help, you are invited to our next meeting on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Bayside Community Center, 904 First St. in Bayside. I and my fellow committee members would especially like to encourage younger residents to join in so our little, but proud, community can keep this event alive for many years to come.
