Crash near Mathis leaves one dead and four children hospitalized

Mathis - The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is investigating a one vehicle rollover crash that occurred today at 4:06 p.m. on IH-37 approximately .25 northwest of Mathis.

According to DPS, a 2004 Ford Expedition occupied by one female driver and four children occupants were traveling northbound on IH-37.

The Ford sustained a rear left tire blow out, causing it to lose control and travel onto the median then rolling over the southbound lanes, and coming to a final rest between the southbound lanes and access road. 

Sonya Estrella Munoz, 32, a Corpus Christi resident and driver of the Ford, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene.  

DPS stated three children were transported to Driscoll’s Children’s Hospital and another 16 year-old was transported to Spohn Shoreline in stable conditions. Munoz was the mother to all four children.  

DPS Troopers are further investigating the fatal crash.
