First and foremost, the Odem athletic department would like to encourage all OEISD students and their families to follow and take interest in our athletic programs. We would also like to thank everyone currently involved and supporting those programs.
With the first semester behind us, all fall sport accolades have been received and basketball is in midseason. Many of our high school athletes were selected to the fall all-district teams.
High school volleyball placed two ladies on the first team, one on the second team and three honorable mentions. Six girls made the academic all-district team. Nicole Ortiz, Katherine Rodriguez, Arabella Garza, Catalina Gamez, and Lizbeth Cruz (trainer) were all selected the THSCA Academic All-State Team. Football placed 13 players on the first team, eight on the second and nine honorable mentions.
Ten football players made the all-academic team. Marcus Martinez, Mark Moreno Jr., Xavier Drennon, and Nicholas Chavira were selected to the THSCA Academic All-state Team. For details on these accomplishments, please visit www.odemowlsathletics.com.
As previously mentioned, all our winter sports are active and in midseason. At this point we would like to take a look at where our programs currently stand. Basketball is in district competition at both the HS and JH level with powerlifting just beginning its season. Each sport has great participation numbers (more than 150 total).
Both JH basketball programs are fighting through the heart of the schedule. The boys eighth grade A team is leading the pack at (4-3), while seventh A team is (1-7). Both boys B teams continue to improve weekly.
On the girls side the teams are a week further along in their schedule. They continue to compete well each week and look to finish the season strong.
The HS basketball programs are also currently in the middle of district play and looking to secure post season berths. The varsity girls are sitting at (7-12, 0-2). The girls JV and freshman teams have also played well halfway into the season.
On the boys side, the varsity is 11-8 and recently began district play. They are coming off of second place finishes in the Mathis and SGA tournaments. The JV blue team is 9-4 with a third place finish in Goliad. The JV gold is 3-3.
Powerlifting has just begun its season and will have its first meet in Goliad after the Christmas break.
We want to wish our winter sports continued success as they close out their seasons. Again we would like encourage all Odem students and their families to take an interest in and join our athletic programs. We would also like to thank everyone currently involved and supporting those programs.
