ANAHEIM, Calif. – Gregory-Portland junior Christian “The Beast” Konoval competed in the 2019 USA Judo Junior Olympic National and International championships in Anaheim, California, June 28-30.
Konoval fought in the National Cadet division (14-18) first falling to a very skilled Armenian opponent in the finals to take silver.
On the second day of competition Konoval won gold in the National IJF Junior division (14-21). Finally during the third day of competition, Konoval represented Team USA in the International Cadet and IJF Junior divisions. For Cadet, Konoval fought his way into the finals, defeating an Armenian opponent to set up a rematch in the finals against his previous Armenian opponent. The match went the distance in a heated and intense battle of skill with Christian losing by decision and taking silver.
In his final International division IJF Junior (14-21), Konoval again represented Team USA and defeated an opponent from Puerto Rico by a choke submission, and an opponent from Mexico by throwing for Wazari and pinning him to take gold in the finals.
Total medal count for Konoval included two gold and two silver and he maintains his #1 U.S. rankings in the Cadet and IJF Junior divisions. Konoval trains under Sensei Rene Zeelenberg and was coached by his father, Adrian Konoval.
