Martha Ann Wendland Owen, 85, died Saturday, June 29, 2019, following a long illness.
Mrs. Owen was born Sept. 23, 1933, to William and Elsie Wendland in Corpus Christi and was raised on a farm between Gregory and Bayside. She was a devout Catholic and had been a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel for many years. She was the 1951 valedictorian of Gregory High School and was the first female athlete in Gregory High School to letter all four years in basketball. After high school, she worked as a bank teller at Taft Bank. In 1954 , she married Ronnie Clay Owen Jr. of Taft and lived in the White Point area for several years before moving to Portland. She retired in 1990, from Portland State Bank (now Frost Bank) as a vice president. She enjoyed cooking, painting, crafting, photography, hunting fishing and travelling to South Fork, Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband, of 60 years, Ronnie Clay Owen Sr.; parents William “Bill” and Elsie Wendland; in-laws, Prentice and Helen Owen; brother, Charles “David” Wendland; and brother-in-law, Jerry Roy.
Survivors include four children, Mary Elaine (Edward) Hoffmann of Roseburg, Oregon, Karen Owen Hammett of Plano, Ronnie Clay (Tita) Owen Jr. of Portland and William Prentice (Mary Alice) Owen of Uvalde; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Thursday, July 11), at Limbaugh Funeral Home with a rosary at 7 o’clock.
A church service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Portland. Burial will follow at Palms Memorial Gardens.
Family and friends are invited to share a meal provided by the Catholic Daughters at the church parish hall following the burial.
