Jose Roberto Esquivel

Jose Roberto Esquivel, 61, of George West, died Tuesday, June 11, 2019.

Mr. Esquivel was born Feb. 20, 1958, in Laredo to Roberto and Enedina Rodriguez (Leal) Esquivel. He was a 1977 graduate of George West High School and married Mary Gonzales in George West on May 1, 1981. Upon graduation, he began his career at Sigmore Refinery, later known as Diamond Shamrock, Ultramar Diamond Shamrock and more recently Valero Refinery. His career started in the maintenance department as well as other positions which led him to promotions as unit superintendent and operational manager as of 2014. 

He was an active member of St. George Catholic Church and enjoyed yard work. As an avid George West Longhorn fan, he enjoyed and supported all sports events.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roberto and Enedina Esquivel; and a brother, Juan Esquivel.

Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Mary Esquivel of George West; a son, Matthew (Victoria) Esquivel of George West; a brother, Jesse (Romelia) Esquivel of Nell; a sister, Rose (Robert) Chapa of Sandia; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Visitation was held from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 14, at Galloway & Sons George West Chapel and continued at St. George Catholic Church from 6 to 8 p.m. A rosary was recited there that evening at 7 o’clock.

The funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the church with Father George Johnson officiating. Burial followed at Oakville Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Bert Ruiz, Jesse Esquivel, Lee Leal, Scott Carroll, Carl Lundquist, Lonnie Merks, Rudy Martinez and Steve Amman.
